At OOW level the syllabus (MIN 653) requires that the candidate demonstrate an ability to monitor compliance with legislative requirements. This requires a basic working knowledge of the relevant IMO conventions concerning safety of life at sea, security and protection of the marine environment. The criteria to demonstrate competence is that legislative requirements relating to safety of life at sea, security and protection of the marine environment are correctly identified.

Harmonised System of Survey and Certification

With so many surveys, inspections and audits, it’s a wonder ships ever manage to put to sea. In order to reduce the burden (financial and logistical) on both ships and those tasked with surveying them the HSSC standardises the period of validity and the intervals between surveys for the nine main convention certificates.

Audit, survey or inspection?

A lot of people - even masters and DPAs - use the terms audit, survey and inspection interchangeably. This is sloppy use of language; each of these words has a specific meaning in a maritime context and your examiner will pick up on it if you are hazy on your definitions.
